​For those who love wild mountains, we lead backpacking trips into the spectacular Ukhahlamba Natal Drakensberg mountains. Ukhahlamba translates from Zulu as the “Barrier of Spears”; The terrain is rugged, steep, exposed in places, wild and magnificently beautiful. If you are a rugged adventurer, these are bucket list experiences that allow you to positively engage your body, mind and spirit.

What is it?

​

These are challenging, multi-day, guided, wilderness backpacking experiences. Depending on the trip, sometimes they take on a light mountaineering element. As with all of our trips we strictly follow the leave -no-trace principles. Distances account for the terrain we walk through, group ability, what we might encounter in the natural environment and the weather conditions. As you push your body with the hiking we promise you will feel your spirit lighten and your mood lift.

The Natal Drakensberg is South Africa’s highest mountain range and has an average escarpment altitude of over 3000 meters above sea-level. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this incredible region is 242,813 ha big and holds four proclaimed wilderness areas. The foothills are made up of sandstone formations, undulating hills and valleys, and the sub-alpine and alpine basalt belt is epitomized with distinctive exposed steep cliffs, pinnacles and an escarpment.

 

First time visitors to Africa are surprised to hear that during the winter months we are able to ice climb at specific south facing venues and that Lesotho has a ski-resort. The weather is cold, but most stable between late autumn and winter. Although absolutely stunning during summer, these months are often rainy and misty.

As with all of our trips, your safety is our priority. The trips we lead into this mountain heaven, demand a level of fitness, the right mindset and the right equipment. By nature of the Drakensberg’s altitude, clients can expect the possibility of the full range of mountain weather. Your guides are thoroughly professional, and your trail leaders have local and international mountaineering experience.
